Hi, This is my first post, that is, I'm a newbie. I installed Mint 17.1 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 1526.
All went well but for a peculiar desktop problem. Thus the desktop shows a lot of irrelevant dots, including the panel. As I can't find a solution in the forum (or on the internet) and as It is somewhat hard to explain in words, here is an image. I am using the proprietary NVidia drivers so that doesn't seem to be the problem. The system information is as follows: Os Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 32-bit Cinnamon version 2.4.5 Linux kernel 3.13.0-37-generic Processor Intel@Core 2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83 GHz x 2 Memory 1.0 GB Hard Disk 114.2 GB Graphic Card NVIDIA Corporation G73M (Geforce Go 7600) Would be grateful for some help. Older graphics cards can be a real pain on Linux, can be, need not be. The NVidia download page suggests that the latest Linux driver for your card is 304.88. So this should be the driver which Linux Mint driver manager has installed.
Could you be persuaded to open a terminal window, run the following command and copy and paste the complete screen output here for inspection, please. Code: inxi -Fxz The random red dots suggest that there might be a conflict between your graphics card, the driver software and/or the Linux kernel. Have you tried to run Linux Mint 17 with the open-source driver nouveau first, before installing a proprietary NVidia driver? (There are situations where nouveau works better. No warranty, this will be the case for you though.) Actually I wonder a bit whether with just 1 GB of RAM Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon might not be a bit too demanding for your notebook.
I wonder a bit whether switching from Cinnamon to xfce might be an option. Note: In order to switch from Cinnamon to xfce it is not necessary to re-install from scratch. Instead it is possible to add the xfce desktop environment to the existing system. You can then switch between Cinnamon and xfce at each login. So the only thing which you will lose by trying will be a little bit of disk space and a little bit of time. Instruction on how to add xfce to Cinnamon can be found here:.

Then I logged out from cinnamon and into xfce. And all the dots and wawes were gone.
Then something mysterious happened (for me as a newbie). Thus I logged out from xfce and into cinnamon again. And now all dots were gone even here?? So I shutdown the computer and then put it on again into cinnamon. And the dots were back again.
I haven't checked if it is possible to put some more ram memory into this computer. Maybe that's a possibility? Anyway here's the output from the command you asked for. This need not be true, however. I see you are using a Linux kernel which is newer than the default kernel which Linux Mint 17.1 would normally bring along. The most recent default kernel would be 3.13.0-44. You are running 3.16.0-29. The reason for asking is that the proprietary nVidia drivers may have been tested to co-operate with kernel 3.16.0-29 or they may not have been tested. But very likely they have been tested against kernel 3.13.0-44.

So this might be the reason why you see the red dots which should not be there. It need not be the reason. Is there still a kernel 3.13.0-xx on your system? If there were, you might select the latest 3.13.0-xx during reboot in the Grub menu and find out whether the red dots will be there or not.
In case they were still displayed even after booting a kernel 3.13.0-xx then kernel 3.16.0-29 could not be blamed and be considerd acquitted. By the way, provided I read the right datasheet and provided I read it correctly, then your Amilo can have a maximum of 2 GB of RAM. Cheers, Karl.
Now, maybe as a typical newbie, I don't know how to boot into grub menu (it normally don't show up). But I read something about holding down 'shift' during boot. So I will try that. Now concerning the kernel, it's a change of my own, as you said just because it was avvailable. I was just taking a chance it would fix the red dot problem without really knowing what I was doing. On the other hand the kernel this new kernel 3.16.0-29 replaced was the one active when this dot problem began (that is, from the first startup). The former was something 3.13.etc.
So maybe it isn't t a fault of the new kernel after all? Anyway, when the problem began a used the kernel provided by the ISO file I downloaded from Mint's own site. Do you think 1Gb extra Ram will fixed the problem? If so I may open up the computer to see if there is some slot for something like that. On the other hand it may be hard for me to get something like that as I for the moment is placed on Gotland, a swedish island in the Baltic. And thanks for all new things I'm learning!
