Hello rbmisc, First of all, you don't have any malware. You have some flaky open-source software, but that is nothing unusual. Normally, a machine will run much more slowly in Safe Mode. But your machine actually runs faster in Safe Mode. I guess the difference can be attributed to your partial install of Sophos that is constantly crashing.
That seems to be slowing down your system by about 10%. Any software that shows up on an EtreCheck report cannot be deleted by merely dragging it to the trash.
You must use a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never try to manually delete files in hidden directories. Never use an 'app zapper'. In some cases, you may need to reinstall the software (the exact same version you had) and then use the proper uninstallation method. However, none of that is going to help your immediate problem. Your 3 TB hard drive has failed.

The hard drives in an iMac are not user-serviceable parts. You will have to take the machine to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service provider. These drives are notorious for failure. At one point, Apple had a recall program for them. But that program has now expired and technically didn't apply to your machine anyway. Regardless, the 3 TB hard drives in iMacs are problematic and most definitely the cause of your problem.
DO NOT attempt to install any antivirus software. Mac OS was designed from it's very onset to be extremely secure and simply needs to be kept up-to-date to remain so. It does NOT benefit from any antivirus, cleaning or ANY third party 'maintenance' apps. Most AV and cleaning apps have the exact opposite effect, they slow down your computer, make it unstable and can sometime damage Mac OS.
If you have any AV apps or cleaning apps already installed, locate the developers instructions and uninstall ASAP. If you suspect your computer has a problem then state what the issue is. Whoever said your iMac had viruses is 100% wrong as none exist for Mac OS. If you can name one you will be the first person ever. They may have been mistaken and call other malware ( a trojan for example) a virus, this is a common issue. Another common error is somehow a user gets a MS Windows virus (from an e-mail for example) on their Mac. This in no way affects Mac OS however if passed on to a MS Windows box that isn't protected then it could be an issue for the Windows user.
A MS Windows virus cannot affect a Mac in any way. Macs can get other malware however and this is a BIG however that malware has to be installed by the user. They can come in the form of downloading from a site that should not be trusted, installing something from a popup, phone call, or e-mail that says the computer is infected (all SCAMS) or using a torrent to download software. Users also will install adware, some of which can cause problems for Mac OS. In short, using a bit of common sense will keep a Mac totally safe by knowing what you are installing. My original post still stands, DO NOT use any antivirus, cleaning or any third party 'maintenance' apps.
You mentioned your computer slowed down, well that can be caused by many different things, a virus being the last possibility. Slow downs can be caused by using outdated apps, installing other malware, using crapware, hardware issues, etc.
However a virus simply is not the problem. So back to your original issue, what I'd suggest is first do a NVRAM reset first and then restarting in Safe Mode and then test your system. If the problem still persists then do the following: Please post an report of your system and we can look for any obvious issues. Please click the link, download and run the app and then post the complete report it produces as your reply to this message. You are right. I apologize, it is malware.
I have already reset the nvram and run first aid on my disk. I have also started in safe mode.
Nothing seems to speed up the computer. I will see get EtreCheck for the report.
The interesting thing is that after I made the first post about not being able to install the application. The installation was open so I could see the message it was displaying, the select a destination was enabled for the program to be loaded. Also, my issue with VirtualBox was no longer a problem. I don't know what enabled these to work.

I have searched and cannot find one simple solution to the lack /inability of firefox to line up my pages correctly instead of looking like a bad printing job on each page, with text over text, the inability to submit pages because the boxes won't line up etc, you know what I am talking about since a lot of people have complained about the same darn thing over and over. I have tried repeatedly to do any of the possible fixes, and NONE of them work. Why not admit you have bungled it and just be a good browser and fix the problem? NO its not because I use Windows Vista, I have used my old XP and MAC and yep, same stupid problem, so have a bit of decency and tell us a simple step by step fix for those of us experiencing this or we will end up leaving and going back to IE simply to be able to use a page without getting dizzy trying to read text within text!
