WPA2 is going to be more secure. However, if you're in an area of low threat then WPA will be just fine. Regarding MAC filtering, MAC addresses can be spoofed very easily since a connected computer sends out the MAC with every ACK packet. It can be stripped and later spoofed once that system is offline. However, MAC filtering does keep random systems from trying to connect - ie; your neighbor whose computer happens to see your SSID and attempts a connection.

Access connections is essentially an overlay to windows' networking controls. If XP SP2 needs a snap-in to support WPA2 then so too will access connections. Glad to hear you are finally up and running. Enjoy the W500!
Just to let everyone know - I did NOT install any sort of 'snap-on' to Windows XP to enable WP2. However, I set the security settings of the Router to WPA2 and then set Access Connections to WPA2 - and everything works just fine (typing this right now from the wireless). Settings are as follows: On the Router side: Router: WRT54G by Linksys (802.11G). Laptop that controls the Router (connected via Ethernet Cable): R52 running Windows XP SP2 Security settings on Router: SSID Broadcast: DISABLED Network security and encryption: WPA2 and AES MAC Address Filtering.
Receiving Laptop: W500 running Windows XP SP2 Running ThinkVantage Access Connections 5.20 (latest version). Security Settings: WPA2-PSK with AES. Everything running fine. I assume that Access Connections is NOT simply an overlay of the Windows Network controls. Note: when I go into check the Network Properties of the Wireless Adapter, I do NOT see a tab labeled 'wireless' which I normally see for Wireless adapters controlled by Windows. By the way, I am quite certain that this IS WPA2 because when I updated the settings on the Router before I had a chance to do so on the W500, the connection was LOST. When I then updated these settings to WPA2, the connection was restored.
Hello, I am having a problem also, but a little different then yours. I have a new lenovo laptop W500.
Adapter is: intel wifi link 5100 agn wireless Operating system is Vista Business 64 bit Router is: Linksys WRT54G WEP( I know I should go WPA) Mac filtering ( I have the correct mac adress in there ) I am using the windows wireless Network connection to Connect. I have 2 laptops and a workstation that all connect wirelessly with no problem. All 3 are running Windows XP Pro. But with this new laptop, everytime I boot-up, I have to go into the adapter properties and change a setting on the adapter to get internet connection. For Instance, I may disable IPv6, or enable it again if the last time I connected I disabled it. Other settings work also, like qos packet scheduler.
Within a few seconds of hitting the ok button, I am connected through my router to the internet. Well after doing all that, my connection seems not to drop anymore while I am using the laptop. But, coming out of sleep mode, it still either doesn't connect or connects for about a minute and then loses connection. Usually, AC Connections and Window thinks they are still connected. But no websites will load.
I have not had to re-boot to fix the connection, but I do have to go into Access Connections and disconnect and re-connect. I will call support again tomorrow and see if they have anything to say.
On the subject of support, I have called 4 times since my last post. 2 of the support techs were helpful. The other two were awful. Like most people in IT, I have put in my time on a helpdesk, so I know how to be courteous and try to help the customer. These two clowns do not need to be on the phone helping people, they should be sweeping floors.
I have been experiencing very similar issues with a new SL500 running XP Pro Service Pack 3 with the WiFi Link 5100. My WiFi access point is Netgear WGR614 v6, and I'm using WEP 128-bit key, with non-broadcast SSID.
ThinkVantage Access Connections is at 5.12. Other WiFi-based computers in the house have no trouble at all. This is very intermittent - sometimes works fine for several hours, then it drops connectivity with HTTP, but oddly, it is usually still able to ping or trace route to various web sites, and the packet counts still go up. (It loses all connectivity over both IE and Firefox). Bouncing the WiFi interface usually restores it. Sometimes it will not connect with the WiFi access point at all.
(Fails in getting IP configuration.) It seems worse in the morning before it gets warmed up, but it is very intermittent. Based on the strange IP behavior (ping working while HTTP does not) I spent a lot of time looking at the Norton Internet Security configuration, made sure Windows Firewall was off, etc. However, when I connect via Ethernet wire, I have never had any problem, so it seems to be WiFi-related and not software/firewall filtering. The WEP configuration seems to be a common point in some of the solutions, so I may try using WPA to see if it makes some difference.

I have been considering calling in, to get a replacement for the WiFi 5100 adapter, but will play a bit more with software configurations first. I'll be happy to hear if there is some specific solution found for this issue which seems to be shared by several others. Hope this data point is useful. Hi there just let you know. I installed the latest SL500 intel pro driver/utils. I also updated SL500 bios to the lastest.
Sadly the customer told me its the same. The wireless connection just drops intermittently. Needless to say, the poor lady is desperate. I am pulling my hair out too.
When SL500 is powered on at their branch office, the Site-2-site VPN link will be crashed too. However that SL500 doesn't have that kind of problem at their head office, I installed XP SP3 and heaps of updates via the wireless. At least I didn't feel its dropping.

This forum is not formally monitored by Lenovo; they have somehow arranged to have some volunteer moderators who are not Lenovo employees, I believe.
I've been fighting the Intel adapter issue too, and it is not limited to Lenovo. It is vaguely possible that this is part of a well-planned program by Intel to attack inexpensive WiFi access points by introducing an incompatibility. It could be that Intel wants to force most home networks to use something which is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compliant, so they can have an easier time enforcing digital rights management on various types of content. However, one might have to be a bit paranoid to believe that.
It's probably easier to ascribe it to programming/interoperability errors due to the complexity of trying to save battery power by shutting down the WiFi. Perhaps we will find the truth sometime. I have just upgraded the WiFi drivers to version 12.2.0.11 in an attempt to solve the problem.

(I have ended up fishing an Ethernet cable from my WiFi access point up to my home office as a backup.) - Paul UPDATE: As of April 13, I have not experienced the WiFi drop problem again, using the 12.2.0.11 WiFi Drivers.
